Orthopedic surgeon, Nicholas K. Callahan, DO, specializes in using minimally invasive surgical techniques for both hip and knee procedures. Outpatient total joint replacement is one of Dr Callahan’s key areas of expertise and he was trained in one of the highest volume outpatient joint replacements centers in the United States. His innovative surgical techniques and the use of digital at-home physical therapy are focused on maximizing the speed of recovery after total joint replacement for all of his patients.

Dr. Callahan uses the kinematic alignment method when performing knee replacement surgeries. This customized method positions the knee with the goal of restoring the native, pre-arthritic joint lines and rotational axes of a patient’s knee. Although intuitive, this is not the way most traditional total knee replacements are performed. He also performs partial knee replacements for patients that are good candidates. Only replacing the portion of the knee that has arthritis helps to preserve the normal anatomy in the remainder of the knee and can lead to a more natural feeling.

He practices the AMIS technique for hip procedures. This minimally invasive anterior approach protects and preserves the periarticular structures of the hip and delivers a huge advantage to the patient: significantly shortened rehabilitation time. His bikini incision method which was designed by a plastic surgeon but adapted for hip replacement surgery, leaves a lesser scar, and heals better than the traditional incision used by most hip surgeons.

Dr. Callahan is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Association of Orthopedics, American Osteopathic Association and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He completed his undergraduate studies at Baldwin Wallace University prior to earning his Master of Science from LECOM in Erie, PA, and his medical degree from LECOM at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA. His orthopedic residency was done at the Orthopedic Surgery LECOM Health, Erie, PA. Dr. Callahan obtained sub-specialty training in Adult Reconstruction Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery at the Whole Health Joint Replacement Institute in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
